A Farmer’s Daughter from Odisha Who Turned a Chance Encounter into a Sporting Future

Lifestyle

Bhubaneswar (Odisha) [India], December 2: Rachana Majhi’s journey begins in the quiet rhythms of Chanalima village in Odisha’s Kalahandi district, where her days once revolved around school, house chores, and helping her mother cultivate their small farmland. Today, the 17-year-old stands among the state’s most promising young archers, a national gold medalist shaped by resilience, opportunity and a grassroots sports ecosystem that unlocked her potential.

Growing up, Rachana and her elder sister were raised single-handedly by their mother, Champa Majhi, after the passing of their father, Late Nabin Majhi. With limited means and no exposure to sports, Rachana never imagined a future beyond academics and farming. That changed in 2021 when coordinators of Vedanta Aluminium’s archery training initiative visited her school in Lanjigarh.

The sight of a compound bow was entirely new to her, yet something about the precision and quiet focus of archery drew her in. She decided to try. That choice quietly marked the beginning of a remarkable transformation.

From village school to state and national podiums

Once enrolled, Rachana entered a structured environment with access to proper equipment, nutrition support, and guided coaching. Her calmness under pressure and strong learning ability stood out immediately.

Her coach, Shambhu Nath Parida, shares,
“Rachana has a rare steadiness. Even when the pressure is high, she stays composed. She learns fast, adapts quickly, and carries a maturity beyond her age.”

Her potential translated swiftly into results.

  • In 2022, she won Silver at the Open State Championship, her first major breakthrough.
  • By 2024, she secured Gold at the School State Championship and another Silver at the Open State Championship.
  • In 2025, she claimed Gold at the SGFI Council National Games, followed by selection for the Sub-Junior National Championship, marking her arrival on the national stage.

For her village, her achievements became a source of pride. For Rachana, they were proof that quiet determination can carve extraordinary paths.

A strong ecosystem powering rural sporting dreams

Vedanta Aluminium’s archery programme, launched in 2018 in Lanjigarh, now trains more than 300 rural and tribal children, offering national-level coaching, modern equipment, exposure opportunities, and mentoring from Olympian Rahul Banerjee. The programme is designed to create a pipeline of athletes from regions where sporting infrastructure is limited, and talent often remains undiscovered.

Speaking about the programme’s impact, Pranab Kumar Bhattacharya, CEO, Vedanta Alumina Business, said, “Rachana’s journey reflects what is possible when opportunity reaches the grassroots. Our goal is to empower young talent from rural communities by giving them the coaching, exposure and support they need to dream and achieve.”

A future carved with precision and possibility

Today, Rachana is considered one of the sharpest young prospects in the programme. Her strengths lie in mental focus, precision, and a strong competitive temperament. From picking up the bow for the first time in 2021 to winning national gold in just three years, her ascent has been steady, disciplined, and inspiring.

As she prepares for the upcoming national championships, she dreams of representing India one day. For a farmer’s daughter from a remote Odisha village, archery has become a doorway to possibilities she once never imagined.

And in quietly charting this path, Rachana is inspiring many young girls across Kalahandi to take aim at dreams that once felt out of reach, just as she did with her very first arrow.
