As part of the World Heritage Week celebrations, a special Heritage Walk was organised today in Ananthapuramu, jointly by Discover Ananthapuram, the Ananthapuram Municipal Corporation (AMC), the District Tourism Department, and the Department of Archaeology.
The walk began at the historic Collectorate, continuing through Victoria Hospital, Arts College, Sub-Jail, Peace Memorial Hall, and culminating at the District Museum—a curated route designed to showcase the city’s iconic colonial and pre-Independence heritage.
Discover Ananthapuram Founder A. G. Anil Kumar expressed deep appreciation for the support extended by District Collector & Magistrate Sri Anand, IAS, and Municipal Commissioner Sri Balaswamy, who ensured the restoration of the 130-year-old Sub-Jail within just 7 days. This rapid conservation effort was taken up specifically to facilitate the Heritage Walk, allowing citizens—especially children—to witness a landmark that has remained closed to the public for over a century.
This year’s walk stood out as the most engaging and child-friendly edition yet. Participants, especially schoolchildren, received specially designed heritage-themed memorabilia including:

Fridge magnets
Coffee mugs
Heritage calendars
Customised canvas bags
Collectible badges
Each item featured illustrations and narratives celebrating Ananthapuram’s rich architectural legacy and historical landmarks.
Officials from AMC, the Tourism Department, and the Department of Archaeology joined hundreds of enthusiastic participants, including students from Aryan School. For the first time in 130 years, children were given a rare opportunity to step inside and view the historic Sub-Jail—an unforgettable moment that brought Ananthapuram’s hidden history to life.

Discover Ananthapuram reaffirmed its commitment to heritage conservation, public engagement, and educating the next generation about the city’s timeless legacy. The organisers expressed gratitude to all departments and volunteers who made this year’s Heritage Walk a resounding success.
